Hero is an exploration of the role of the storyteller and the relationships artists have between the two halves of themselves: the crowd-fronting persona and the person behind the curtain. Through the lens of filmmaking and framed by the 17-step Monomyth (sometimes called “The Hero’s Journey” as theorised in Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With 1000 Faces) “Hero” is a collection about the pressure to follow the story path laid out before us and the urge to break the mould and just be.
As the collection progresses the poems themselves rebel against and shuck off the restrictive monomyth, breaking free of the prescribed narrative “happy ending” mentality for one of peace and balance and wellness.
'Sarah flexes her storytelling prowess in Hero. There’s such a sense of confidence in how well this collection is put together. Sarah clearly knew what she was doing when she was writing and putting this together and it results in a series of poems that are so enjoyable to read, no matter the subject matter.' - Tyrone Lewis
'Immersing yourself in Sarah’s writing is an experience steeped in curiosity, juxtaposition and joy - and Hero is testament to all the richness of her storytelling. There’s no complacency in her work, reading this collection feels physical. Her poems are at once reassurances and chal-lenges, her writing a question and an answer, her characters intimate as friends and surprising as strangers. When I read Sarah’s work, I feel like I understand the world a little differently, like something has sharpened that’s always been just out of focus. If that’s not the sign of a radical writer, I don’t know what is.' - Imogen Stirling
